Lifeguard

On the homepage of ISN (Instituto de Socorro a Náufragos) there is this banner where you can read in Portuguese “at the beach don’t become a victim, going and coming back only depends on you”. Sometimes it depends on the other person who has to get in the water in order to save you from drowning, the lifeguard.
Today I’ve finished the second day of examinations to become exactly that. After a month of intense training on water and a good dosage of theory I’m accomplished the physical and mental standard, being awarded a lifeguard status.

In the beginning of the year I’ve decided to take this course as an inner-voice was telling me I need to be able to do something to help people in trouble, with respiratory or heart failure – the last time someone needed my help I just panicked. Since my environment is mainly the liquid type I thought this course would give me that. Now, maybe I can save the next one …

Year of the pig

Today in china people are celebrating a new year, the year of the pig, with me being a pig according to the Chinese. In China, the Boar (豬) is associated with fertility and virility. To bear children in the year of the pig is considered very fortunate, for they will be happy and honest.
“According to customary superstition, the Pig type is usually an honest, straightforward and patient person. They are a modest, shy character who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes. When others despair, they are often there to offer support.
Despite those born in the year of pig having a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, they have few close friends who understand them and share their inner thoughts and feelings. It is easy to put trust in pig type; they won’t let you down and will never even attempt to do so. Such people simply want to do everything right according to social norms. Also according to customary superstition, that these people are not vengeful creatures. If someone tries to take advantage of them, the pig type tend to withdraw to reflect on the problem and protect themselves. All they need in such situations is a little time to find a constructive way to respond.
They are not weak, however, and if the situation forces them to fight these people will rise to the occasion, whether it is to defend themselves or those close to them.” (source: wikipedia)
Not bad, hey?
Well I hope the year of the pig brings clean and praiseworthy moments and not filthy events and suffering. Like in the story from Edward Monkton, someone offered me time ago: “I know”, thought the pig. “I shall become an extraordinary pig. I shall see the best everyone and everything. I shall become the pig of happiness.”

Valentine’s day at the Japanese Embassy

Around 3pm we started gathering at the entrance of the Japanese Embassy in Lisbon, after passing it a couple of times without noticing it was it.
14 of February is the day the world celebrates as the day of love, we had flowers and a message to the Japanese Ambassador in Lisbon, but this action was to be reproduced in another 27 different countries, an initiative started by Greenpeace.
By 3:40pm we decided to go in, we were a small group of 7 people, there were cameras and journalists to cover the event and we headed to the reception and ask to deliver the flowers to Hara Satoshi the Japanese Ambassador. A member of staff came down to inform us that the Ambassador was currently in Japan, so we asked to talk with another representative. We were told to wait, while we were waiting some interviews for the press were made, some more waiting and finally the member of staff came back saying 2 people were allowed to go up, but media wouldn’t be allowed.
So 2 of us gone up and were cordially received by 2 Japanese Delegates. We had then the change to tell them why we were there, to demystify and put a final mark on the theme that whaling in some like western vs Japan, it is not, and to ask them to leave the Southern Ocean to the Whales, by saying that Killing whales in an Protected Area is like chopping down tress at a National Park. In addition we asked Japan to withdraw their proposal to host the IWC meeting in 2009, since Portugal proposed first, never organized any IWC meeting since it joined and Japan did it twice during the last decade. It will be important for the conservation movement and Portugal to host a very successful meeting without have to go through competition that would potentially divide the commission itself and jeopardize its outcome.
That was it. The Portuguese leg of the initiative was completed.

Later at home I open my mail to be shocked by the fact that Nisshin Maru was on fire. Apparently there is a missing person, and the thing doesn’t look good…
I truly hope they are sound and safe.

There is the risk of oil spill what would result in a major environmental catastrophe for the pristine area that is the Antarctic. Like Erik Blanc sustained “This news demonstrates the whole tragic nature of Japanese Southern Ocean whaling.” True enough. Apparently there are only a couple of good weather days ahead, after no one knows what can happen…
I truly hope all Nisshin Maru crew is safe and sound.
